That's cool that Ellroy records commentaries for classic films, though--I can't think of any other genre novelists who do that sort of thing.Adam Zanziehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14524618281515322239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3211112229982829419.post-56829365872600882322010-11-18T17:54:42.591-05:002010-11-18T17:54:42.591-05:00It's a collection of short stories selected by...It's a collection of short stories selected by Ellroy & Penzler, who offer brief introductions to each of the tales beforehand.

"Fuck with people" sounds like Ellroy's M.O., and not a bad one to live by by any means. Have you ever seen "The Lineup," a 1950s film noir starring Eli Wallach and directed by Don Siegel? I highly recommend watching it on DVD twice: once for the movie, which is damn good; the second time to listen to Ellroy's uproarious commentary track with Eddie Muller. His personality comes through at full boar. The guy knows movies, not a common attribute among novelists.Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01450775188328918558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3211112229982829419.post-20823614010766859852010-11-18T15:25:36.939-05:002010-11-18T15:25:36.939-05:00Hmm... is the book a collection of all the noir st...Hmm... is the book a collection of all the noir stories from the last century or is it a collection of critical essays by Ellroy and Penzler about the stories? Sounds interesting.

I didn't know that about Ellroy's right-wing viewpoints. Although I looked it up and apparently he only acts like a reactionary to "fuck with people". His nihilism probably has something to do with the fact that nobody ever found the man who murdered his mother. I've seen the movie versions of his books, although I have yet to read the books themselves... someday I might try to read The Black Dahlia. He claimed that the 3-hour cut of De Palma's feature film was a "masterpiece"; wish I could see that cut, then, because I'm decidedly mixed on the 2-hr cut. L.A. Confidential, of course, is brilliant.Adam Zanziehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14524618281515322239noreply@blogger.com
